What is stepvideo?

stepvideo is a Chrome extension and web app that turns one screen recording into an edited how-to video (zoomed on your clicks, dead time compressed, mistakes cut, with AI voiceover and word-by-word captions) plus a written step-by-step guide from the same take. Teams use it for onboarding, support answers, SOPs and product demos.

What you get

One take. Three things to hand over.

One pass produces the video, the written guide, and the share page.

How one take becomes all three

The edited video

Zooms on your clicks, dead time compressed, mistakes cut, voiceover and word-by-word captions — 1080p.

Recording bar reading 'Recording screen 00:10' over a Google Slides deck, with the presenter's webcam in the corner of the slide

A written guide

The same steps, numbered, each with a screenshot from your recording. Print, paste, or publish.

A page of a generated guide: 'Step 01, Navigate to Mautomate', two numbered instructions and the step's screenshot, with a text formatting toolbar above it

A share page

Every render gets a page that plays the video — public, or unlisted for link-only access.

Share dialog with Public access switched on, 'Anyone with the link can view', a stepvideo share link and a Copy link button

Everything a video editor does minus the video editor.

Built for solo SaaS founders who need product tutorials. Record the workflow once and the engine does the cutting, the zooming, the voiceover, and the captions — you fix the words.

One long take in, a tight video out.

Customize your video flow

Reorder, merge or delete steps, drop an image on the frame, or open on a title card.

Zooms land on your clicks

The engine punches in where you clicked, so viewers watch the control.

Resize for any aspect ratio

Export the same take wide (16:9) or vertical (9:16), or let Auto keep the shape you recorded.

Set the perfect mood with music

Select a soundtrack from our library of twenty, or upload your own to match your style.

Subtitles as files

Captions are burned in, and every spoken video also gives .srt and .vtt files.

A blur that follows

Move the blur onto a secret and it stays there as the page scrolls.

Crop the background image

Zoom and drag an image background to the part that matters; the export frames it the same way.

Branded video templates

Keep your videos consistently on brand with themed intros, outros, and backgrounds.

Your brand, not ours

Logos, backgrounds, music, voices and your own glossary of terms, kept in one kit.

Told what's worth a look

Every export returns notes on what is worth a second look. Advice, never a gate.

Dead time speeds by

Page loads, spinners and thinking pauses are sped through automatically, so nothing drags.

Ask your library

Ask a question in chat and get the answer from your own guides, with every source linked.

The same recording, written down.

Auto-generated documentation

After you record, the engine writes the step-by-step guide that explains what the video shows.

Share your file

Every render gets a share page, public or unlisted by link, and the guide downloads as a PDF.

The edit rules

“AI edits it for you” is not an answer.

The whole decision table the engine runs on. Shipping defaults, not an illustration — override any of them per step.

Zoom on a click
up to 1.8×
Punches in so the control fills at most 60% of frame, floored at 55% of the source. Tiny targets zoom to the form or dialog they live in, not the pixel you clicked.
Sharpness floor
1.8× max stretch
A crop never stretches source pixels past 1.8× at render — a zoom that would turn to mush becomes a shallower zoom, or none.
Clicks close together
merged under 2s
Rapid clicks in one area become a single move instead of a camera that jitters between them.
Zoom move
600ms in, 2.4s hold
Long enough to read as a deliberate push-in, long enough to actually see the result.
Dead air over 4s
played at up to 3×
Page loads, spinners and thinking pauses are sped up, not trimmed. A long wait at the end of a step plays faster again once its narration has finished.
Arriving on a page
5s protected
Going quiet after you navigate somewhere is showing the result, not dead air — that footage plays at full speed.
A redone step
abandoned take cut
Flub a step, redo it and keep going: the attempt you abandoned is left out. If one slips through, split or delete that step in the editor.
Narration
written per step
Your own words, cleaned up — product and company names are read off the page you recorded, not guessed from the audio.

Privacy

You are recording a real dashboard.

Secrets are matched and removed on your machine, before the recording is ever uploaded — and anything still visible on screen is flagged for you, so on a paid plan you blur what you choose.

Private Keys

Private key blocks are matched and redacted out of the capture on your machine, before anything is uploaded.

Bearer Tokens & JWTs

Bearer tokens and JWTs are redacted from the capture. One left on screen is flagged, so you can blur it in the editor.

API Keys

OpenAI, Stripe, AWS and GitHub keys are detected and redacted — along with anything long and random enough to read as a secret.

Card Numbers

Card numbers are Luhn-checked before they are redacted, so a real card is caught and an order number is left alone.

Email Addresses

Email addresses are redacted from the capture too. One visible in the frame is flagged, so you can blur it in the editor.

How it works

How to use step video

Watch people walk through it in their own words — what they record, what stepvideo does with it, and what they ship. Press play on any one of them.
