stepvideo vs Descript

stepvideo.ioDescript

Descript's idea is that you edit video by editing the words — delete a sentence from the transcript and it leaves the cut. stepvideo's idea is narrower: a software walkthrough is a list of steps, so edit those. If you make podcasts and YouTube as well as tutorials, that breadth is worth a lot.

No credit card needed — 5 AI video minutes, free for 10 days.

Before the table: when Descript is the right call

Descript is an all-purpose AI video and podcast editor. There are jobs it does better than we do, and this is the list. If you recognise yourself on the right, we'd rather you went and used it than churned in month two.

Pick stepvideo when…

  • Every video you make is a software walkthrough, and you want the zooms and cuts decided from click events rather than from a transcript.
  • You need a written step-by-step guide out of the recording — Descript's pricing page doesn't list one.
  • You'd rather buy rendered video minutes than manage media hours and AI credits.

The claims on our side are all specified. Read the edit rules

Pick Descript when…

  • You also make podcasts, interviews or YouTube — Descript is built for all of it and stepvideo is built for one thing.
  • Transcript-based editing genuinely is the better interface for talking-head content.
  • You want a bigger free tier and a $16–24/month entry point.
  • You need 4K export; stepvideo renders 1080p.
  • You want studio-grade audio tools, multitrack and green screen.

What you get

One take. Three things to hand over.

One pass produces the video, the written guide, and the share page.

The edited video

Zooms on your clicks, dead time compressed, mistakes cut, voiceover and word-by-word captions — 1080p.

Recording bar reading 'Recording screen 00:10' over a Google Slides deck, with the presenter's webcam in the corner of the slide

A written guide

The same steps, numbered, each with a screenshot from your recording. Print, paste, or publish.

A page of a generated guide: 'Step 01, Navigate to Mautomate', two numbered instructions and the step's screenshot, with a text formatting toolbar above it

A share page

Every render gets a page that plays the video — public, or unlisted for link-only access.

Share dialog with Public access switched on, 'Anyone with the link can view', a stepvideo share link and a Copy link button

Questions

stepvideo vs Descript, asked plainly

Can Descript make software tutorials?

Certainly — it records your screen and edits well. The difference is that their pages do not describe anything reading your clicks, so the zooms, the step boundaries and the guide are yours to build. stepvideo's whole engine is downstream of those click events.

What resolution does stepvideo render?

1080p. Descript's pricing page lists 4K export from the Creator plan. If you need 4K, that's a real reason to pick them.
