Alternatives

Scribe alternatives for how-to videos

Scribe turns a click-through into a step-by-step document with screenshots, fast. People look for a Scribe alternative when the audience won't read — when a wall of annotated stills gets skimmed and a ninety-second narrated video with zooms on each control gets watched — or when they want the video and the doc from one recording rather than two tools.

Prefer the row-by-row version? stepvideo vs Scribe.

Before the list

First: should you actually leave Scribe?

Scribe is a step-by-step documentation tool. There are jobs it does better than anything below, and if you recognise yourself on the left, the cheapest alternative is the one you already have.

Stay with Scribe if…

  • A written guide really is all you need, and you want the cheapest, fastest path to it.
  • You document desktop software. Scribe's paid plans include a desktop capture app; stepvideo is Chrome-only.
  • Your team wants a large shared library of text SOPs more than it wants video.
  • Scribe's Pro Team seat is $17/month — cheaper per person than stepvideo for text-first documentation at scale.

Look for an alternative if…

  • Your audience won't read the doc. A narrated video with zooms on each control gets watched when a wall of screenshots gets skimmed.
  • You want both artefacts from one recording, kept in sync when the product changes.
  • You need narration and captions, not just captions on stills.

The list

8 Scribe alternatives for how-to videos

Coming from Scribe, start with 'A written guide from the same take' on each card: that is the deliverable you already have and must not lose, and it's the row Scribe's page lists most plainly. Then check the price line against Scribe's per-seat number — most tools here price the video, not the seat, so a cheaper document tool and a dearer video tool can both be the right answer for different teams.

Ours first — it's our site — then the rest, closest to Scribe first. Every other card quotes that company's own pricing or product page as of 15 August 2026, and links to the row-by-row comparison it was written from.

Questions

Leaving Scribe, answered plainly

Do I lose the written guide if I leave Scribe?

No — that is the one thing this page would be pointless without. Every stepvideo recording produces a numbered written guide with a screenshot per step from the same take as the video, and you can rename, reorder, merge or rewrite steps in it. Scribe's guide is its core output; here it's one of three deliverables.

What happens to the Scribe guides I already have?

They stay where they are. stepvideo doesn't import them, and we wouldn't advise migrating a working library of internal text SOPs — the sensible split for many teams is to leave the long tail of text procedures in Scribe and make the twenty customer-facing walkthroughs that have to be watchable in stepvideo. Nothing about either tool stops the other working.

Scribe is cheaper per seat — when is stepvideo still worth it?

Per seat, Scribe wins: its Pro Team seat is $17 a month, stepvideo Creator is $29 a month for 3 seats. The comparison isn't seat-for-seat, though — the stepvideo price buys 25 rendered video minutes a month, zoomed on the controls you clicked, narrated and captioned, plus the guide. If the guide alone is what your audience needs, stay; the price is the tell.
