stepvideo vs Screen Studio

stepvideo.ioScreen Studio

Screen Studio is the closest thing on this site to a like-for-like comparison: it does automatic zoom on cursor actions, and it does it better-looking than we do. The difference is everything after the zoom — whether the tool also writes the narration, burns the captions, produces a written guide, and runs somewhere other than a Mac.

Before the table: when Screen Studio is the right call

Screen Studio is a macOS screen recorder with automatic zoom. There are jobs it does better than we do, and this is the list. If you recognise yourself on the right, we'd rather you went and used it than churned in month two.

Pick stepvideo when…

  • You are not on a Mac, or your team is not all on Macs — Screen Studio lists macOS 13.1+, and its FAQ says there are no near-future plans for Windows.
  • You want the narration written for you per step and re-voiced a step at a time, rather than recording your own voice.
  • You want a numbered written guide with a screenshot per step out of the same take, not just the video.
  • You want the video in another language — speak one, publish in many.
  • You would rather nothing was installed: the capture is a Chrome extension and the render happens on our machines, not yours.

The claims on our side are all specified. Read the edit rules

Pick Screen Studio when…

  • The cursor and zoom motion is the thing you care about most. Theirs is the nicest-looking automatic camera work in this category, and that is a real reason to buy it.
  • You record software that is not a browser tab — a native app, an installer, a terminal, a design tool. Screen Studio is a desktop app and records the machine.
  • You want one flat price with every feature in it: $9 a month billed yearly, and billed monthly it sits level with Creator, on the pricing section we read.
  • You need 4K 60fps, GIF export, motion blur, or iPhone and iPad recording over USB — all listed on their page, none of them things we do.
  • You prefer your files to stay on your own machine. Theirs is a local app; ours uploads the take and renders in the cloud.

What you get

One take. Three things to hand over.

One pass produces the video, the written guide, and the share page.

The edited video

Zooms on your clicks, dead time compressed, mistakes cut, voiceover and word-by-word captions — 1080p.

Recording bar reading 'Recording screen 00:10' over a Google Slides deck, with the presenter's webcam in the corner of the slide

A written guide

The same steps, numbered, each with a screenshot from your recording. Print, paste, or publish.

A page of a generated guide: 'Step 01, Navigate to Mautomate', two numbered instructions and the step's screenshot, with a text formatting toolbar above it

A share page

Every render gets a page that plays the video — public, or unlisted for link-only access.

Share dialog with Public access switched on, 'Anyone with the link can view', a stepvideo share link and a Copy link button

Questions

stepvideo vs Screen Studio, asked plainly

Screen Studio already does automatic zoom. What is left to compare?

Everything the zoom doesn't do. Screen Studio hands you a beautifully moved recording of your own voice and screen; stepvideo hands you a narrated video it wrote, captions burned in, and a numbered written guide with a screenshot per step, from one take. If you are happy writing and speaking the narration yourself on a Mac, their product is excellent and cheaper.

Can I use Screen Studio on Windows?

Their site lists macOS 13.1+, and their FAQ answers the Windows question directly: no, with no near-future plans, read on 2 October 2026. We previously called this an open roadmap question, which was more generous than their own page. stepvideo runs in Chrome, so the operating system does not come into it.

Which is cheaper?

On a yearly plan, Screen Studio clearly: $9 a month with every feature included. Billed monthly the two sit level, read on 2 October 2026, so the honest answer changes with the billing term. What the Creator price buys is 25 rendered AI video minutes with the narration, captions and written guide produced rather than performed, and there is a 10-day free trial with 5 AI minutes, no card.
